Let's slow this down. Seriously. I know that sounds backwards.
I've worked with over 2,500 recruits heading into every branch. When I ask them "What do you want out of this?" there's usually a pause. Not because they don't care. Because nobody ever asked them before.
So here's my list. It's for you, before you sign anything.
GROUND TRUTH
Talking to a recruiter is not the first step. Figure out what you want first, or someone else will decide it for you.

What should I do before I talk to anyone?
1. Talking to a recruiter is not the first step. Get clear on what you want before that first meeting.
2. If you don't know what you want, SOMEONE else will decide for you.
3. Picking a branch or job without a reason is like picking a college without a major. Can be good. Can be bad.
4. Study for the dang ASVAB. I winged it, got lucky, and it might have narrowed some of my options years later. Your scores help decide which jobs you can get.
WATCH OUT
Don't walk into the ASVAB cold. "I'll just wing it" worked for me by luck, not by plan.

What is it really like once I'm in?
5. Hurry up and wait. The unwritten motto of every branch. I could spend hours on this one.
6. The military will give you a path. But it might not be YOUR path.
7. Yes, you can change jobs later. But it's not quick, it's not easy, and it sure isn't fun.

Is slowing down really worth it?
8. Slowing down and figuring it out at the start gets you further, faster and happier.
9. The brothers and sisters you gain will change you. I never saw that coming. It's what keeps people in for decades.
10. This decision will shape your life in ways you can't see yet. Some good, some hard. And once you're in, it becomes part of who you are.
DO THIS
Before you do anything else, answer one question in writing: What do I want out of this? If you can't answer it yet, that's your first job.
So if you're thinking about the military... don't do anything just yet. Start with you.
If you're thinking about the military, getting the whole map before you talk to a recruiter is the right move.
Appreciate you.
