Start With The Honest Answers
The Warrior Collective is the unbiased field manual for anyone considering U.S. military service. Through The Dispatch newsletter, the Before Basic Training podcast, and a 7-phase enlistment journey, we give recruits and their families the honest answers recruiters do not always offer — built by veterans for the people standing where they used to stand.
Phase 1: Start Here covers eligibility, components, and the WHY. Phase 2: Choosing Your Branch compares Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, Guard, and Reserve. Phase 3: Recruiter Prep walks through the questions, documents, and forms. Phase 4: ASVAB Prep covers subtests, the AFQT, and a study plan. Phase 5: MEPS Prep explains the process, PULHES, and waivers. Phase 6: Fitness and Mindset covers branch standards and the goodbye conversation. Phase 7: Preparing to Ship covers the DEP and ship day.
Start with Phase 2: Choosing Your Branch. The Army has the widest range of jobs (150+ MOS, 10-week BCT). The Navy is technical and travel-heavy (8-week RTC). The Marines run the longest enlisted basic at 13 weeks and recruit on identity. The Air Force and Space Force have the highest entry standards and the best quality of life. The Coast Guard has the highest AFQT minimum. Guard and Reserve let you serve while keeping civilian roots.
Spend 8–12 weeks studying 30–45 minutes a day, starting with a diagnostic practice test. Free, official prep is available at official.asvab.com, march2success.com, and Khan Academy (which fully covers the math sections). Phase 4: ASVAB Prep on this site walks through the four AFQT subtests, branch minimum scores, line scores, and the retest policy.
