Most people think the transformation happens at basic training. It doesn't. Basic training just reveals it.
The real work is happening right now. In the runs you don't feel like finishing. In the early mornings when no one's watching. Every time you do it anyway, you're building evidence about who you are.
GROUND TRUTH
Every branch gives you a fitness test, and the minimum is the floor, not the goal. The physical part is almost never what breaks people, so train your mind as hard as your body.

What fitness test will my branch give me?
Here are the events and the minimums to pass. Numbers change by age, so check the official chart for yours.
Army: Army Fitness Test (AFT)
You need 60 points on each event and 300 total. Combat jobs need 350 and use the men's numbers. Minimums for ages 17 to 21 (men / women):
3-rep max deadlift: 150 / 120 lbs
Hand-release push-ups (2 min): 15 / 11
Sprint-drag-carry: 2:28 / 3:15
Plank: 1:30 / 1:30
2-mile run: 19:57 / 22:55
Navy: Physical Readiness Test
Minimums for ages 17 to 19 (men / women):
Push-ups (2 min): 46 / 20
Forearm plank hold
1.5-mile run: 12:15 / 14:45
Ages 20 to 24: 42 / 17 push-ups and 13:15 / 15:15 on the run. To graduate you also swim 50 yards and do a five-minute float.
Marine Corps: Initial Strength Test (before you ship)
Men: 3 pull-ups or 34 push-ups (2 min). Women: 1 pull-up or 15 push-ups.
Plank hold
1.5-mile run: 13:30 men / 15:00 women
At boot camp you move up to the PFT: pull-ups or push-ups, a plank and a 3-mile run.
Air Force: BMT fitness assessment
Push-ups
Sit-ups
2-mile run
Waist-to-height ratio
You must hit a minimum on each part and a minimum total score. The points change by age and gender, so ask your recruiter for the current scoring chart.
Coast Guard: fitness standards for all new members
Minimums (men / women):
Push-ups (1 min): 29 / 15
Forearm plank: 1:18 / 1:09
1.5-mile run: 12:29 / 15:05

DO THIS
Test yourself on your branch's events this week. Write down your numbers. Your goal is to walk in beating the minimum, not barely meeting it.
WATCH OUT
Going from zero to full intensity is how recruits get hurt before they even ship. Build your running base first, add strength second, push intensity third.
FROM THE ARSENAL
Building up the right way takes a plan, not just hard workouts. Mission: Fitness (coming soon) builds your training around your branch's test, so you walk in beating the minimum, not chasing it. Get on the waitlist →

If it's not the physical part, what breaks people?
Here's what nobody tells you:
Being cut off from everyone familiar
Every decision being made by someone else
Less sleep than you're used to
The fear of failing in front of strangers
Discomfort you expect is manageable. Discomfort you didn't see coming is what makes people quit. Now you've seen it coming.

How do I get my head right before I ship?
Focus only on the next 24 hours. Today's run. Today's meal. Tomorrow is tomorrow's problem.
Your drill instructor is not your enemy. They're doing a job. Follow instructions without argument or attitude.
Find your team early. Help the person next to you and you help yourself.
Know your WHY. The real one. That's what you reach for when nothing else works.
DO THIS
Before you ship, sit down with the people you're leaving behind. Not a text. A real conversation. Say the things that should be said while there's still time to say them.
The person who ships out isn't built at MEPS. They're built right now.
Appreciate you.
