Day 7: You're enlisted. Now what?

Signing isn't the finish line. Use the wait before you ship to train, stay out of trouble and get your life in order.

Day 7: You're enlisted. Now what?

Fig. 1 · Day 7: You're enlisted. Now what?

Signing feels like the finish line. It isn't.

Once the recruiter shakes your hand, nobody's pushing you to the next step. It's just you and the choices you make when nobody's watching. That's exactly when it counts most.

GROUND TRUTH

Basic training doesn't build you from scratch. It reveals what you've already been building in private, so the wait before you ship is your real training ground.

Ship Day

01 / 04

Why am I not shipping right away?

Most recruits wait for a training slot. It can be a few days or up to about a year. The Army calls it the Future Soldier Program. Most other branches call it the Delayed Entry Program, or DEP.

The name changes. The experience doesn't. Hurry up and wait. Welcome to your first real military experience.

02 / 04

What do I have to do while I wait?

You're enlisted now, and that comes with real obligations.

  • Stay in touch. Army Future Soldiers go to weekly meetings and check in with their recruiter every two weeks. Your branch will set your schedule.

  • Stay fit. Army Future Soldiers get a fitness check every month. Every branch tests you again once you arrive.

  • Report changes right away. A new legal issue, a medical change, a new dependent. Tell your recruiter first.

WATCH OUT

A new charge or a failed drug test can cost you your job, your bonus or your spot. It's rare, but it happens, almost always to recruits who stopped paying attention after signing. The hard part isn't over. It's changed shape.

How do I use this time well?

This is your best shot at showing up to basic more prepared than the person standing next to you.

DO THIS

  1. Train. Build on the baseline you've got. Don't slide back to zero.

  2. Study your job. Recruits who show up knowing a little about their field stand out.

  3. Get your life in order. Bank access, car, bills, phone, pets. Don't leave it for ship week.

  4. Prep your people. Tell your family what the quiet stretch at basic looks like. They're going through this too.

  5. Pack the list. Bring what your recruiter's packing list says. No more, no less.

Worried about REAL ID for the flight? Don't be. Since February 2026, TSA clears recruits from every branch headed to basic without one, at no cost. Your family will still need a REAL ID or another accepted ID, like a passport, to get on base for graduation, so tell them now.

When in doubt, leave it home. This is not a trip. This is a report date.

FROM THE ARSENAL

The wait before you ship is the best training time you'll get, so use it. Mission: Fitness (coming soon) builds your training around your branch's test, so you walk in beating the minimum, not chasing it. Get on the waitlist →

What do I do with everything I've learned?

Here's what nobody tells you. You now have something every beginner wants: experience. You've sat with a recruiter. You've taken the ASVAB. You've sat in the MEPS waiting room and told the truth about something that scared you, and it turned out to be manageable.

That's exactly what someone on Day 1 needs. Pass it on.

And at some point, maybe on the bus or the night before, it'll get real. That moment isn't a warning sign. It's proof you took this seriously. Before you go, find the why you wrote down on Day 1. That's what carries you through.

YOUR NEXT OBJECTIVE

You made it through all seven days. Now lean on the people a few steps ahead of you, and reach back for the ones a few steps behind.

Appreciate you.
