Week 4 of Army basic training: the first scored fitness test, then a night in the field

The Army is following one basic training company at Fort Leonard Wood week by week. In week 4, trainees took their first official Army Fitness Test, ran land navigation in the rain, and closed out Red Phase with a field exercise.

Air Force special warfare trainees are finishing sooner, with the same standards

The Air Force rebuilt the training road for pararescue, combat control, TACP and special reconnaissance. Everyone now goes through selection, then a new 16-week foundation course at Lackland, and follow-on schools are lined up so trainees stop sitting idle between them.

Why it matters to you BRANCH CHOSEN

Eyeing Air Force special warfare? The average trainee now waits about two months less between courses, and the bar to earn the beret did not move. Less waiting means the fitness you show up with matters even more.

The Pentagon sent a Medal of Honor Marine to inspect barracks in person

Dakota Meyer, a Marine reservist who received the Medal of Honor, is now senior advisor to the Pentagon's Barracks Task Force. His job is to walk barracks, talk with the troops who live there, and clear whatever is slowing down repairs.

Why it matters to you PARENTS

After basic and job training, a single enlistee usually lives in the barracks, the part of military life families hear the least about. Ask what the barracks look like at likely first duty stations.
