Weekday intel for recruits and parents

BLUF · Bottom line up front

  • A Colorado Springs report finds military recruiting up two years running while youth unemployment climbs. More applicants means more competition for the jobs you want.
  • The Army Reserve has about 100 volunteer ambassadors nationwide who help families far from bases and can start a student on the Minuteman ROTC scholarship.
  • November GI Bill payments go out early in the month. Housing money only keeps coming if the student verifies enrollment every month.

More young people are signing up as the job market for teens gets tougher

A Colorado Springs reporter spent time at an Army recruiting office and a high school JROTC program to see why enlistments are up. The Army and Air Force both hit their goals early two years in a row, and a RAND economist says the military looks better to young people when civilian jobs are hard to find. Youth unemployment has climbed since 2023. One recruiter said the Army's prep course helped a recruit raise an ASVAB score sharply, and that the course now lets a recruit work on fitness or test scores, but not both.

Why it matters to you JUST THINKING

More people in line means more competition for the jobs, bonuses and ship dates you want. The wait to ship is already a few months. Score well on the ASVAB the first time and you walk in with more choices.

The Army Reserve has volunteer ambassadors in your state who can open doors

The Army Reserve appoints about 100 unpaid ambassadors across the country, many of them retired senior leaders, to be the steady local face of the Reserve while command teams rotate every two to three years. A new Army story from Washington state shows what they do: help a student start the Minuteman Scholarship, a four-year ROTC scholarship for future Reserve officers, connect families who live far from any base with support, and point soldiers with employer problems to ESGR.

Why it matters to you PARENTS

If your family lives nowhere near a military base, the Reserve can feel like a mystery. An ambassador is one more adult who knows the system and lives in your community. Ask the recruiter who yours is.

How GI Bill money actually moves, as November payments go out

A Pennsylvania outlet walked through what GI Bill students should expect this month. Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the VA pays tuition to the school, and the student gets a monthly housing allowance, prorated by the days enrolled and paid only when enrolled more than half time. Students must verify enrollment at the end of every month, and Post-9/11 housing payments pause after two months without it. The Montgomery GI Bill pays one monthly amount straight to the student after that month is verified.

Why it matters to you PARENTS

The GI Bill is one of the biggest reasons families say yes to service. Know going in that it is a monthly system with a monthly check-in, not a lump sum, and that a service member earns it with at least 90 days of active duty, with the share growing the longer they serve.
